I joined in the Smut Marathon this year for the first time, as I’d like to improve my erotic writing. My aim is to go as far as I can in the competition, of which there are 10 rounds.
In the first round, no one was eliminated (hurrah). Of 120 writers, 95 sent their entries in on time. The task was to write an erotic sentence between 15-25 words, containing alliteration.
My entry was number 38, and I received 3 public votes (one of those was my own vote), then I scored 1 point from each of the 5 judges. This combined score gave me an overall ranking of joint 27th out of 30.
What did I write, I hear you ask… my entry is below:
20 lashes
The soft leather of his belt felt like the static crackling of electricity, as he peppered her smooth svelte hide.
Some of the feedback I received included May More’s querying of my use of the word felt rather than sounded. I agree that sounded may have conveyed the ‘crackling’ better, though in this instance my intention was to use assonance, in the words belt and felt 😉 May also commented that she liked the word ‘peppered,’ so thank you May for your constructive feedback <3
Brigit Delaney explains her voting criteria in her blog post. I have to agree that when voting, I eliminated any entries that seemed to have an overuse of alliteration that made the sentence into too much of a tongue twister. I cannot remember the numbers of the entries I voted for, though they must have stood out to me at the time I read them.
Another comment my entry received was about the use of the word ‘svelte.’ The person commenting (apologies, I’ve forgotten who wrote this comment as I saw it whilst quickly scrolling on my phone) mentioned svelte would not have been their choice to describe skin. They also did not feel keen on my use of the word hide. They would have used that word to describe a good thrashing, I believe, rather than some flogging. Fair point, so thanks again for the constructive feedback 🙂
Round 2 has been opened, and closes on the 26th February. Voting for Round 2 is between the 1st and 6th March. If you want to vote, please check back on the Smut Marathon 2020 site, and choose between 3-5 entries that particularly stand out to you. Of course, I cannot reveal the task for Round 2. 😉 However, once voting goes live you’ll be able to see the challenge that faced all the writers (including yours truly).
I hope you enjoyed reading this post. For more of my erotic writing check out the Eroticon Anthology 2018 Truth. I also have a collection of short stories on this blog.

I love that you are writing about the marathon, and your thoughts behind your entry. Thank you for that 🙂

Thanks Marie, like with most things in life, participation is key and it’s good to reflect too. <3
With so many entries (109) it is difficult to stand out in just a sentence. That is why it is really cool everyone will get another chance. Once again I like your attitude – a competition is a competition and so there will always be winners and losers but – IMO – the way a person handles the ups and downs says a lot – I really hope you do well next round Luv Bunny. I like your writing style and would love to have you in the comp when the task is longer.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts on round one LB. Good on you for entering this year and I hope you enjoy taking part. I totally agree with all that May said. All the best for round two.
Thank you CP, it will be interesting to see how far I can go, as there are lots of skilled writers. I’m all for practising though, and looking forward to seeing what round 2 brings. 😊
