It’s been a few months since I posted an update on my battle against stage 4 bowel cancer.
At present I am receiving fortnightly chemotherapy treatment, with the same regime as previously stated.
I’ve just had Round 9 of 12, and I’ll be having another CT scan to coincide with Round 12.
In the meantime, I have sought to get HRT for my menopause symptoms. I spoke to a specialist GP, and discussed trying the Oestrogen gel that you rub into you thighs. Because I still have my womb, I’ll also need to take Progesterone. I’ve opted to take it in tablet form if I can, and will see how well I can absorb it with my ileostomy.
As I have a history of Osteoporosis in my family, I’ve requested a Dexa (bone density scan) too. So I’m waiting on my Oncology consultant to say Ok to the HRT and get the Dexa scan arranged.
Plans to return to work
I’m planning to go back to work on a phased return, from next week. I’ll do 3 afternoons a week initially, but on the chemo treatment weeks, it’ll just be two afternoons. It’ll be too much of a health and safety risk to work while my pump is attached to my Port-a-Cath.
I’m looking forward to getting some normality back in my life. It’s been just over 7 months since I got signed off on long-term sick leave.
Plans for fun with my family
Since I had my diagnosis, my mindset has shifted a lot. I want my family to have more experiences together so we have some plans coming up, including:
- Easter plans to go to Butlin’s to see the Gladiators and The Masked Singer shows, as well as a whole host of entertainment and fun.
- A cinema trip to see Six the Musical.
- Easter egg hunts.
- May half-term family holiday to Norfolk.
- June trips to London to the Phantom Peak Experience, and the Tutankhamun experience.
- A local food festival in July.
- A trip for the 3 of us to visit an actual Tudor castle and stay a couple of nights, and take in the history. Henry VIII stayed there with Anne Boleyn.
- A summer concert to see the Manic Street Preachers, the Charlatans and Ash, in August.
- Hopefully a short Eurostar break if I can get the ok to travel overseas from my oncologist.
All these plans give me something to look forward to, and give me a boost during these trying times. Mr Bunny had a crap week this week, with some bad news about his work. I won’t say more here at present, but it will make things a bit trickier for a few months. But if I can battle stage 4 cancer, I sure as hell can help my family get through their trials too.
I’ll round this up now, but just wanted to provide a quick update on what’s been happening.
